N MEMORIAM (Nothando Zulu)

Dear Friends and Supporters of The Givens Foundation for African American Literature. It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Nothando Zulu, a beloved member of our community. Nothando was not only a Community Mother and a Master Storyteller, a Co-Founder and President of the Black Storytellers Alliance, she was also a dedicated community activist. For over five years, she worked with the Senior Resources and over a decade with the Ruth Hawkins YWCA, both organizations located in the Northside of Minneapolis.

Nothando’s storytelling was a wellspring of inspiration, laughter and joy and her role as a Cultural Specialist and historic Storyteller at The Givens Foundation of African American Literature enriched the lives of our constituents immensely.

She was also the cherished spouse of Vusumuzi Zulu and the proud mother of Makeda Zulu, who currently serves as the Executive Director of the Minneapolis-based University of Minnesota Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC), as well as a loving grandmother.

Her transistion is an immense loss, not only for the Twin Cities but for the entire national arts community and our collective village.
